The Emerald City

Nothing beats a sunny day in Seattle.

And when I visited last weekend, there she was--the Emerald City--gleaming beneath the spring sun, seducing me with her sparkle. It never rains when I'm in town. She is such a tease. The 70 degree weather, azure skies, Mariners games, old friends, and thick ocean air are like the intricate components of a fishing lure--the perfect combination of color, texture, movement, and shine--enticing me to move back.

I avoided the hook this time around; we all know there are probably 360 days without sun in Seattle. So for now, as much as I love the place (and all my friends that live there), I think I'll forego the the heavy, gray blanket of clouds and the mild case of depression that go along with them. If I were an artist or musician I would probably reconsider immediately.

I'm not sure what spurred my sudden obsession with waterfalls, but there was no way I could bomb out of Seattle one more time without stopping to admire Snoqualmie Falls. Regrettably, in all the years I lived in Western Washington, I had never visited Snoqualmie Falls. I actually only cared about the place because it's the source of my favorite pancake mix (not because it's the source of 41990 killowatts of electricity). Duh.

The pancake mix will always have my heart (and my stomach), but the falls were spectacular. Just off I-90, the hum of passing cars is gradually drowned out by the sound of rushing water. The view is just as breathtaking as the drop in temperature that overcomes you as you approach the lookout. I probably stood at the viewing platform for a solid 10 minutes soaking in the rising mist, mesmerized by the water pouring over the cliff edge.

I am officially obsessed with waterfalls! And I am dying to stay at the Salish Lodge, perched atop Snoqualmie Falls, so I can wake up to the music of booming water and savor a gorgeous view and world famous pancakes!

Lewis and Clark

My friend and former Whitworth volleyball teammate Brittney (Bower) Young is having a baby girl! Brittney is the cutest pregnant person to ever live, and Baby Morgan is going to be smokin' hot if she's anything like her momma. Brittney and Baby Morgan had a baby shower last weekend in Eugene, Oregon where the Youngs now live. So, Whitney and I made off like Lewis and Clark to pay a visit to Duck Country.

When you have a friend like Whitney, you stop taking pictures because she's all over the photographer role. I guess that's because she's a photographer. With that said, I didn't take a single picture at the baby shower and there's no sense in stealing Whit's photos and posting them here. So if you want a recap of the weekend, go to Whitney's blog. It's totally worth seeing Brittney's cute belly.

I will just reiterate how special it was to be in the company of great friends, new and old. Although I don't know that I will ever have children because the moms at the shower decided it was a good idea to discuss the gory details of childbirth. But all in all, it was a refreshing weekend.

I will also mention that Whitney and I shouldn't be allowed to ride in a car together for six hours because it's a circus. We may or may not have almost died once or twice. Luckily, we avoided a highway tragedy and made a pitstop at Multnomah Falls. We were both pouting because we didn't have our big kid cameras. Look how gorgeous this place is.

We Found the Bat Cave!

I took a quick trip home a few weekends ago to visit family and to celebrate a major milestone for one of my best friends.

I arranged to meet up with a few cousins and a couple uncles to hike Oyster Dome. Talk about too many Vander Meulens on one trail! Our family trek provided endless laughs and gorgeous views of Skagit Valley. I truly believe the Pacific Northwest is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Unfortunately, the trail was beyond confusing towards the top, and we didn't actually find Oyster Dome. We ended up at the Bat Caves instead. It wasn't quite the view we had anticipated, especially after 4 miles of steep, muddy trails, but still pretty spectacular.

The real reason I went home was to see my dear friend Melissa and to celebrate her graduation from nursing school. I could not be more proud of this girl. I can't even fathom all the time and energy it took to get through it. Plus, she is pregnant! School and pregnancy? Umm.. no thank you. But she did it because she is amazing.
